Product Description
Non-oxidizing biocide is an aqueous solution of glutaraldehyde that is especially effective in controlling slime-forming bacteria, sulfate-reducing bacteria, and algae in recirculating water cooling tower systems.
APPLICATION
Non-oxidizing biocide is a highly effective microbiocide for control of slime and algae in cooling towers, evaporative condensers, air washer systems, enhanced oil recovery systems, and process waters. It is EPA registered as effective over a broad spectrum of microorganisms, and functions over a wide pH and temperature range. It is compatible with all types of corrosion and scale inhibitors and is effective against aerobic and anaerobic organisms.
PHYSICAL PROPERTIES
Specific Gravity @ 20°C: 1.042
Vapor Pressure @ 20°C: 18.1 mm Hg
Freeze Point: -6.5°C
Solubility in Water @ 20°C: Complete
pH: 3.7 to 4.5
Density: 8.68 lbs./gal.
DOSAGE
Non-oxidizing biocide should be added to a water treatment system at a point of uniform mixing such as the basin area. Application may be continuous or intermittent slug dose. A noticeably fouled system will require higher treatment levels initially, until control is evident. Subsequent dosages would be reduced. SLUG FEED: Initial: 4.1 TO 8.2 fl. oz. per 100 gal. system capacity. Subsequent: 1.7 to 4.1 fl. oz. per 100 gal. system.
HANDLING & PRECAUTIONS
Non-oxidizing biocide solutions are corrosive to many commonly used construction materials such as steel, galvanized iron, aluminum, tin, and zinc. They may be stored and handled in polyethylene, baked-phenolic-lined steel, stainless steel, or reinforced epoxy plastic equipment. This product freezes at about -6.5°C. Therefore, unless the storage tank is inside or underground, heat and insulation may be required. If heating is needed, exposure to high temperatures should be avoided. For short storage times (up to about a month), temperatures up to 100°F. can be tolerated, but the preferred maximum storage temperature is about 80°F. A stainless steel centrifugal pump is suggested for transfer service. Asbestos is suitable for gaskets and packing.
HAZARDS
Corrosive. Causes burns. Causes eye damage and skin irritation. Avoid breathing vapors. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing. May be absorbed through skin. Wear goggles or face shield and rubber gloves when handling. May be harmful or fatal if swallowed. Avoid contamination of food.
STORAGE AND DISPOSAL
PROHIBITIONS: Do not contaminate water, food, or feed by storage or disposal. Open dumping is prohibited.
PESTICIDE DISPOSAL: Pesticide, spray mixture, or rinsate that cannot be used or chemically processed should be disposed of in a landfill approved for pesticides or buried in a safe place away from water supplies.
CONTAINER DISPOSAL: (a) Reseal container and offer for reconditioning, or (b) triple rinse (or equivalent) and offer for recycling, reconditioning, or disposal in approved landfill, or bury in a safe place. GENERAL: Consult Federal, State, or local disposal authorities for approved alternative procedures.
ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS
This pesticide is toxic to fish. Do not discharge into lakes, streams, ponds, or public waters unless in accordance with an NPDES permit. For guidance, contact your regional office of the Environmental Protection Agency.
